Discovery Plus Not Available In This Location: Here’s How I Fixed It

Watching documentaries is one of my favorite things to do in my spare time. I usually watch them on Discovery Plus. 

Last week, I decided to watch BBC’s Frozen Planet, but the app kept flashing the ‘Discovery Plus not available in this location’ error message. 

This was strange since I live in California, where the Discovery Plus service as well as the documentary are available.

I tried to stream the documentary on my phone, and it worked fine, but the Discovery Plus app on my smart TV kept showing the geo-location error. 

I couldn’t find a viable solution online so, I contacted the Discovery Plus help desk to get more insights. 

Fortunately, with their help, I was able to resolve the problem within a couple of hours.

To resolve the “Discovery Plus not available in this location” error, clear the Discovery Plus app cache via “App Settings” in your device menu and relaunch the app. If Discover Plus continues to give the geo-location error, update the location settings of your device. 

Why is Discovery Plus Not Available in My Location?

Discovery Plus is only available in the United States, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Attempting to watch it from any other region results in the ‘Discovery Plus not available in this location’ error. 

However, many people also face this error while streaming it from the supported regions.

This happens when Discovery Plus is not able to access your location correctly. 

Troubleshoot Discovery Plus’s Location Error on a Particular Device

Sometimes, Discovery Plus gives you a location error on a particular device due to corrupt cache files or software bugs.

To identify whether your device is at fault, try streaming Discovery Plus on another device.

If it works on other devices, then the Discovery servers are not able to access your location correctly on the affected device.

You can try the following methods to resolve this problem: 

Clear the Cache and Restart Discovery Plus

Based on the device you are using, follow the below steps to clear the Discovery Plus app cache.

Doing so will clear out the app’s memory and force it to start afresh.

iOS device

  1. From the app drawer, open “Settings”.
  2. Scroll down and click on the “Discovery Plus” app.
  3. Toggle the “Reset cache on next start” button ON.
  4. Toggle the “Clear temp data on next start” button ON.
  5. Go to the home screen.
  6. Relaunch the Discovery Plus app.

Android Device

  1. Open “Settings” on your device.
  2. Scroll to “Apps”.
  3. Click on “Manage apps”.
  4. Select the “Discovery Plus” app.
  5. Click on “Clear data”.
  6. Click on “Clear cache”.
  7. Go to the home screen and restart Discovery Plus.

Smart TV

  1. From the home screen, click on “Settings”.
  2. Click on “Apps”.
  3. Select the “Discovery Plus” app.
  4. Click on “Clear cache”.
  5. Go back to the home screen.
  6. Relaunch the Discovery Plus app.

If you stream Discovery Plus on a browser, you will need to clear the browser cache to solve the geo-location error.

Web Browser

  1. Open a new tab in your browser.
  2. Press “Ctrl + Shift + Delete” simultaneously on your keyboard.
  3. Select “Cookies and other site data” and “Cached images and files”.
  4. Click on “Clear data”
  5. Close the browser and relaunch it.
  6. Open and stream your favorite shows. 

Reinstall Discovery Plus

If you continue to get the geo-location error on Discovery Plus after clearing the cache, you will need to reinstall the app on your streaming device. 

Depending on the device you use, follow the respective steps to reinstall Discovery Plus on your device.

iOS Device

  1. Open the app drawer on your device.
  2. Long press the “Discovery Plus” app.
  3. Click “Delete App” from the menu.
  4. Open the app store on your iOS device.
  5. Search for “Discovery Plus”.
  6. Click on “Download” and install the app.
  7. Relaunch the “Discovery Plus” app.

Android Device

  1. Open “Settings” on your device.
  2. Scroll to “Apps” and click on “Manage Apps”.
  3. Select “Discovery Plus” app.
  4. Click on “Uninstall”
  5. Open the app store on your device.
  6. Search for “Discovery Plus”.
  7. Download and install the app.
  8. Relaunch “Discovery Plus” app.

Smart TV

  1. Long press the “Return/Exit” key on the remote to force shut the app.
  2. Press “Home” on the remote.
  3. Navigate to “Apps” from the menu on-screen.
  4. Click “Settings”.
  5. Select “Discovery Plus”.
  6. Click on “Delete”.
  7. Press the “Return/Exit” button on the remote to return to the Apps screen.
  8. In the search bar, enter “Discovery Plus”.
  9. Click “Install”.
  10. Open the app and enter your login details. 

Check the Device Location Settings

Discovery Plus displays the location error if your device triggers a different location than the supported ones.

To correct this, you will need to check and tweak your device location settings.

  1. Open your device settings.
  2. Search for ‘Language and Region’.
  3. Make sure your current region is selected correctly.
  4. Restart Discovery Plus. 

Troubleshoot Discovery Plus’s Location Error on All Devices

If Discovery Plus gives you the geo-location error on all your devices, the problem lies with your network connection.

This may be because your Internet network is triggering a wrong location.

Stream Discovery Plus Using a Different Internet Connection

If you face a location error while streaming Discovery Plus over your usual Wi-Fi connection, switch to mobile internet data and check if it works fine.

Do note that separate data charges may apply while using your mobile internet. 

Disconnect VPN

If you or anyone else connected to the same Wi-Fi network is using a VPN, it might trigger Discovery Plus to relay a different location.

In this case, you need to turn off your VPN for Discovery Plus to work normally.

If you still get the geo-location error, contact your Internet Service Provider to troubleshoot any wrong location triggers from their end.

If you are not able to stream Discovery Plus on any of your devices after going through the above-detailed solutions, it is likely an error on part of the streaming service.

I was able to resolve this error by clearing the Discovery Plus app cache and restarting the app. 

If that does not work for you, delete the app from your device and reinstall it. 

In case your device is registered in the wrong location, change the device region to your current location.

If you use a VPN, turn it off so Discovery Plus can access the right location.
