Hulu Error Code Metadata-2: Here’s How I Got Rid Of It

I have been a Hulu user for years now.

As much as I love the variety of shows and movies it offers, the platform is notorious for its fair share of streaming errors.

From dealing with server communication errors on a movie night with my friends to trying to get rid of runtime glitches while binge-watching Grey’s Anatomy, I have spent hours dealing with these errors.

Just when I thought I knew my way around all Hulu errors, I came across the Hulu Error Code Metadata-2 while watching Tootsie the other night.

I had a long day at work and just wanted to unwind by watching my favorite movie of all time.

The error was frustrating, to say the least.

Fortunately, I was able to find a solution within a few minutes.

The Hulu Error Code Metadata-2 is caused by an outdated Hulu app. To fix this issue, go to the play store or app store (depending on the device you are using), search for the Hulu app, and click on the ‘Update’ button.

What Is Error Code Metadata-2 On Hulu?

Error Code Metadata-2 arises when the Hulu servers are blocking video streaming.

You can get the Error Code Metadata-2 while streaming media through Hulu on any smart device, including TVs, smartphones, laptops, or gaming consoles.

The error page reads the following message,

“Error playing this video. Sorry, we encountered an error playing this video. Please try restarting the video or select something else to watch. Error code: metadata-2”

Why Is Hulu Giving The Error Code Metadata-2?

Some of the common reasons for Error Code Metadata-2 on Hulu are:

  • Outdated Hulu App
  • Improper Router Settings
  • VPN is Enabled
  • Outdated Browser

Update The Hulu App

If your Hulu app is outdated, there is a high chance that the server will block any communication attempts. This can also be caused by a missing patch file.

Ensure you are using the latest version of the Hulu app to get rid of this issue.

Here’s how you can update the Hulu app on your smartphone:

  • Open the Play Store or App Store.
  • Search for ‘Hulu’ and open the main app page.
  • Click on the ‘Update’ button and wait for the process to complete. My app is already updated so it says Open.

Note: If there is no update button, you are already using the latest version of the Hulu app.

To update the Hulu app on your smart TV, follow the steps:

  • On the Home screen menu, go to Apps.
  • Click on Google Play Store
  • Go to My Apps
  • Scroll down to check for any Hulu updates.
  • If there is an update button, click on it and wait for the process to complete.

Updating the Hulu app also puts a stop to Hulu restarting a show from the beginning.

Log into Hulu Using Another Device

If updating the app does not work for you, log into your Hulu account using another device and resume watching the video.

This will re-establish the communication between your Hulu account and the Hulu servers.

After this, restart the Hulu app on the first device.

Turn Off VPN

If you are using a VPN while streaming media on the Hulu app, there is a high chance that your access to the media is blocked by the Hulu Servers.

Currently, Hulu services are only available in the US.

If Hulu detects an IP address from other parts of the world trying to access the media, the communication is instantly blocked.

To eliminate the error, disable the VPN and restart your device to stream media.

A VPN can also cause Hulu to display the “Your login has been blocked” error.

Update The Browser

If you are using Hulu on a browser and are receiving the Error Code Metadata-2, your browser might not be up to date.

To ensure that an outdated browser is not causing hindrance, ensure you are using an updated version of the browser.

Here’s how to update Google Chrome:

  • Open Google Chrome and click on the three dots (more settings) in the top right corner.
  • Click on Help and select the About Google Chrome option.
  • Click Update Google Chrome, and restart the browser once the process is complete. My Chrome is already updated so it looks like this:

Note: If you can not find the update button, you already use the latest version.

To update Microsoft Edge, follow these steps:

  • Open Edge and click on the three dots (more settings) in the top right corner.
  • Click on Help and feedback and select the About Microsoft Edge option.
  • Click Update, and restart the browser once the process is complete.

Fix Router Settings

If none of the solutions mentioned in the article have helped you resolve the issue, ensure your router settings are configured correctly.

The first thing you need to check is the DNS settings.

DNS is a domain name system connecting your device to the world wide web.

Here’s how you can change the DNS settings of your router:

  • Log into your network router by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
  • Go to the IP Address, Networking, or DNS Server settings.
  • Select manual DNS settings and add the numbers 8.8.8.8. This is the Google Primary DNS server.
  • Save the Changes on the router.
  • Now reboot your router.

The next step should be changing your router’s Quality of Service settings. Here is how this can be done:

  • Log into your network router by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
  • Open the wireless settings tab and go to QoS Settings.
  • Click on the Setup QoS Rule button and then click on the Add Priority Rule button.
  • Delete all the set priorities and save the settings.
  • Now reboot your router.

Incorrect router and network settings can also give birth to Error 94 on Hulu.
