I stream Hulu using Chrome on my Asus laptop.
I could watch all my favorite shows until last week when Hulu stopped working.
Hulu displayed an error that said “Unsupported Browser”.
I restarted the browser and refreshed the tab but to no avail.
I spent a few hours on the internet looking for a solution.
I found other Hulu users who reported the same issue on the Community tab of Hulu.
Luckily, I found a few methods that worked.
To fix the error “Unsupported Browser” on Hulu, you must update your browser to the latest version. You can update it from the browser settings. Alternatively, you can also download the latest version using the official website of your browser.
Update Your Browser
This is the first fix I tried, and it worked instantly.
Using an older version of your browser often gives the error “Unsupported Browser”.
Hulu recommends installing the latest version of the browser on your device to fix this issue.
To update Chrome,
- Click on the three-dot menu in the top right corner of the browser.
- Select Help.
- Select the About Google Chrome option.
- Click on Update.
To update Firefox,
- Click on the right toolbar.
- Select the menu button.
- Select Help and click on About Firefox.
- It will automatically check for the latest updates.
- Download the update.
To update Safari,
- Open the Apple menu.
- Open the App Store.
- Find Safari and click on the update button.
To update Edge,
- Go to “Setting and more”.
- Click on “Help and Feedback”
- Select About Microsoft Edge.
- Check for updates.
This method will only work if you use an older version of these browsers.
In case you already have an updated browser version and still can’t fix the issue, try the next step.
Enable JavaScript in Your Browser
Some users prefer browsing with JavaScript disabled.
Disabling JavaScript simplifies your browsing experience by removing ads, and images and loading fewer elements than it normally would.
It is particularly helpful when you have a slow internet connection and want the web pages to load faster.
However, this also restricts you from using certain websites that need JavaScript enabled by default.
Hulu recommends enabling JavaScript on your browser to avoid functionality issues.
To enable JavaScript in Chrome,
- Click on the three-dot menu on Chrome.
- Select Settings.
- Click on Privacy and Security from the left panel.
- Scroll down and select Site settings.
- Select JavaScript under Content.
- Enable Sites can use JavaScript
To enable JavaScript in Firefox,
- Type “about:config” on the search bar and press enter.
- Accept any warning if prompted.
- Go to the search bar and type “JavaScript.enabled”.
- Toggle the “JavaScript.enabled” option and make sure it says ‘true’. If it doesn’t, double click the option to enable JavaScript.
To enable JavaScript in Safari (macOS),
- Click on the Safari button located at the top of the browser.
- Select Preferences from the drop-down menu.
- Select the Security tab.
- Click on the Enable JavaScript checkbox.
If your Hulu login has been blocked, check your VPN and network settings.
Switch To A Different Browser
Hulu currently supports only four web browsers – Edge, Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari.
While you could face the issue on any of them, you should try using a different browser while streaming Hulu.
This isn’t a fix.
However, it can help you avoid the “Unsupported Browser” error.
If you don’t want to download an extra browser to run Hulu, another workaround might help.
Download The Hulu App On Your Device
If nothing works, you should download the Hulu app on your device.
The Hulu app cannot be downloaded on Mac currently.
However, you can download it on Windows.
To do this,
- Open the Microsoft App Store on your device.
- Search for Hulu.
- Download and install Hulu.
- Once done, launch the app and log into your Hulu account.
If Hulu says “We’re having trouble playing this”, power cycle your laptop.
Screen Mirror Hulu Using Your Phone
If Hulu is not working on your browser, screen mirroring it using your phone can be a great option.
This method would only take a few minutes to set up.
It involves downloading third-party applications like ApowerMirror on your phone and PC.
The app works on both Windows and Mac.
Screen mirroring is not a long-term solution since there’s a small delay while playing any content.
However, It can temporarily help you stream until Hulu starts working on your browser again.
Get User-Agent Switcher For Your Browser
While searching for solutions, I discovered the “Unsupported Browser” error was commonly reported on Windows and Mac.
There are only a few ways to fix the issue yourself.
If updating the browser doesn’t work, you should try out a different browser or download the app on your device.
Screen mirroring will downgrade the video quality, so it’s the last thing you would want.
Hence, I would recommend installing a User-Agent switcher for your browser.
When you access a website, the User-Agent string sends your browser details to the server, like name, version, OS, and rendering engine.
If Hulu blocks your browser, you can use a User-Agent switcher to spoof your browser, device, and OS details.
This will unlock your browser. However, it comes with downsides like slow loading speed.
